Where did Alice find herself when she fell down the rabbit hole? Well, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson aka Lewis Carroll got it wrong I'm afraid. Fantasy world? Yep, Alice's idea of fantasy was a crisp fresh prawn toast and some piping hot Singapore noodles.
Located... well, ingeniously. There are no two ways about it. There you are, driving up to that massive Tesco that Leyland boasts, the one that was still being built during my Runshaw days a decade ago (ah, Runshaw), anticipating the drudgery of an autumn evening's shop. What do I want to do, you say to yourself, do I want to be chopping vegetables or do I want to be zapping a salty plastic-packaged would-be lasagne in the microwave. Or...
There gleams Wonderland, a yellow beacon of hope, visible from the car park. It's so close that the SO and I actually managed to grab tomorrow morning's breakfast from Tesco while we were waiting for our Wonderland dessert. Basically, the way it works is this. If you've a large birthday group like we had, you can book a table and opt for the buffet. It's £14 a head which allows you to order as much or as little as you like. There's just one stipulation... if you order it, you have to get it eaten, otherwise you pay full price for it! Very strict indeed.
We took the offer and ordered up a bunch of appetisers, then another. Lazy Susans on the table made it easy to pass around food and water, and everything was cooked fresh - even the prawn crackers. The salt and pepper tofu was very unusual and the prawn toasts were definitely among the nicest I've had. Mains were thankfully pretty small... I think they anticipate over-ordering to try and get one's money's worth! The prawns were cooked very well indeed and all the accouterments went down a treat too. The service was very polite and a delightful time was had by all.
I looked forward to this midweek meal and I'll certainly look forward to another. Wonderland, you live up to your fantastical moniker!
